Sister Roberta Schachle, OSB
It all began in Western Oklahoma in the small town of Canute where I lived with my parents and seven brothers and sisters. At my father's request, I attended college and then entered the community in Guthrie in 1945.
While learning the Benedictine Way, I also prepared for my life work of teaching and being a part of parish life. I've taught subjects in all grades, with a focus in my area of strength, mathematics. The National Math and Science Foundation gave me a grant to obtain a Master's Degree in Mathematics from Syracuse University, New York.
Fifth grade was my favorite grade to teach because the children were creative, loved to learn and were a 'little' grown up in so many ways.
Over the years I have been involved in many community service activities, and have traveled to many places in the states and abroad.
My life in community is where I have worked and developed my gifts and talents. I enjoy reading, visiting with friends, and pursuing my many hobbies: pottery, weaving, stained glass, stitchery and other creative works of art. Today I primarily focus on my pottery. My community service work continues to be that of hospitality at our community Retreat House.
